Concert: Cécile McLorin Salvant

J'ai eu l'immense plaisir d'assister samedi dernier à La Villette au concert de Cécile McLorin Salvant avec Aaron Diehl au piano, Paul Sikivie à la contrebasse et Lawrence Leathers à la batterie. Ayant précommandé le nouvel album de Cécile, "For One to Love", j'avais déjà entendu les nouveaux titres et me demandais sur le trajet si je n'aurai pas du attendre un peu, pour profiter de l'effet de surprise. 

I've had the huge pleasure to go last Saturday at La Villette (Paris) to the concert of Cécile McLorin Salvant with Aaron Diehl on piano, Paul Sikivie on bass and Lawrence Leathers on drums. Having preordered Cécile's the new album, "For One to Love", I had heard the new tunes and I wondered on my way to the concert if I shouldn't have waited, to enjoy the surprise effect. 

En première partie, nous avons eu droit à un show de Hugh Coltman sur le thème de son nouvel album, Shadows - Songs of Nat King Cole. Je ne connaissais pas en dehors de quelques clips vus sur Youtube histoire de savoir de qui il s'agissait. Cela m'a semblé plutôt sympa. 

The first part of the show was with Hugh Coltman on the theme of his new album, Shadows - Songs of Nat King Cole. I didn't know with the exception of a few clips seen on Youtube in order to see what it was about. It seemed to be rather nice. 

Je passe rapidement sur Hugh Coltman, qui n'a pas démérité, mais dont le son n'était pas au top à mon avis. J'étais d'ailleurs assez inquiet pour la suite du programme, me demandant si l'acoustique de la salle souffrait d'un défaut ou si c'était ma place qui n'était pas terrible. J'étais assis au premier rang, mais complètement à gauche de la scène. 

I will not spend too much time on Hugh Coltman, who did well, but the sound was not great in my humble opinion. Actually, I was kind of worried for the next part of the program, wondering if the acoustic of the room suffered from a defect or if it was my seating that wasn't too good. I was in the first row, but completely to the left of the scene.  

Heureusement, lorsque Cécile et ses musiciens ont commencé à jouer, le son était parfait. Sans doute une question de réglage! Je ne suis pas ingénieur du son...

Fortunately, when Cécile and her musicians started to play, the sound was perfect. Probably a setup issue! I'm not a sound engineer...

J'ai passé un moment fabuleux. Cécile nous a embarqués dans son univers musical, plein de subtilité, d'humour et de tendresse. Elle était assistée par un trio de musiciens d'une grande qualité auxquels elle a laissé l'occasion de s'exprimer dans un parfait respect de l'esprit du jazz. J'ai été comblé par la spontanéité, le rythme et le sens du swing de cet ensemble de très jeunes musiciens. Ils n'ont pas encore 30 ans, mais quelles artistes!

I spent a fabulous moment. Cécile embarked us in her musical universe, full of subtlety, humor and tenderness. She was assisted by a trio of musicians of great quality that she managed to let express themselves in a perfectly respectful jazz spirit. I have been fulfilled by the spontaneity, rhythm and swing of this ensemble of very young musicians. They are not yet 30 but what artists!

Je n'étais pas seul à aimer et le public a ovationné debout, provoquant 2 rappels pendant lesquels nous avons eu droit à davantage de plaisir musical, dont un fabuleux solo de batterie de Lawrence Feathers. 

I was not the only one to love it and the public made a standing ovation provoking 2 recalls that provided us with even more musical pleasure, including a fabulous solo by Lawrence Feathers. 

Je tiens à noter que j'ai particulièrement apprécié la voix de Cécile chantant en français. C'est là encore un de ses atouts de pouvoir changer ainsi de registre. Sa voix en français étant subtilement différente, peut-être moins assurée, moins jazzy, mais très envoutante. Sa version du "Mal de Vivre" de Barbara était superbe. 

I'd like to note that I particularly appreciated Cécile's voice when singing in French. This is again one of her assets to be able to change registry. Her French voice is subtly different, maybe less assured, less jazzy, but very moving. Her version of "Le Mal de Vivre" from Barbara was superb.  

Je suis tombé amoureux de Cécile en écoutant FIP, un soir dans les embouteillages, dans son interprétation de "Oh My Love" de John Lennon avec Jacky Terrasson. En prenant ma place pour venir enfin la voir et l'écouter en LIVE, je m'attendais à passer un bon moment, mais j'ai été comblé au-delà de mes espérances. Alors si vous avez l'occasion d'aller la voir, n'hésitez pas une seconde. Allez-y!

I fell in love with Cécile while listening to FIP radio, one evening in the traffic, in her interpretation of "Oh My Love" from John Lennon with Jacky Terrasson. Getting my ticket to come and finally see and listen to her LIVE, I knew I'll have a good time, but my hopes have been fulfilled way beyond my expectations. So, if you get a chance to see her, do not hesitate for a second. GO!
