Martin Silver Plated C-Melody - Introduction

Ma première expérience de saxophone "vintage" m'a conduit à explorer les marques et modèles, notamment la marque "Martin" qui m'a semblé être particulièrement intéressante. Une marque de légende utilisée par Charlie Parker dans les années 40, même s'il a adopté par la suite le King Super 20* ou joué le fameux Grafton en plastique! J'ai découvert le Super 20 après avoir revu 'Bird' de Clint Eastwood. Intrigué par la clé d'octave inversée, j'ai recherché les modèles concernés et suis tombé sur ce modèle King Super 20, mais aussi sur des Buescher 400 Top Hat and Cane ou certains Conn 6M (VIII). Autant de saxes particulièrement désirables!

My first "vintage" saxophone experience drove me to explore the brands and models, especially the "Martin" brand that sounded quite interesting. A legendary brand used by Charlie Parker in the 40's although he later on adopted the King Super 20* and played the famous Grafton plastic saxophone! I discovered the Super 20 after watching Clint Eastwood's 'Bird' again. Intrigued by the underslung octave key, I searched for the matching models and bumped into the Super 20, but also the Buescher 400 Top Hat and Cane or certain Conn 6M (VIII). All of which are particularly desirable horns. 

En tout cas, nombreux sont les fans de Martin alors je me suis mis en tête d'en trouver un. Après quelques mois de patience, je mets la main sur la perle rare! Sur eBay, aux USA. Un Ténor argenté ou du moins quelque chose qui y ressemblait beaucoup. La taille de l'instrument était précisée, mais ce détail n'a pas immédiatement attiré mon attention. Il m'a intrigué, puis j'ai vérifié et alors compris qu'il s'agit en effet d'un C-Melody. 

In any case, there are many Martin fans so I had in mind to find one. After a few months of patience I finally get my hands on the rare gem!  On eBay, in the US of A. A silver plated tenor or at least something that looked a lot like one. The size of the instrument was mentioned, but that detail didn't raise my attention initially. It intrigued me, then I double checked and understood that it was in fact a C-Melody.

J'apprécie beaucoup ses revues qui donnent une appréciation technique des instruments basée sur l'expérience concrète d'un luthier. Je recommande son site avec ses conseils pratiques et j'approuve totalement son approche: Testing, testing, testing... Dans mon autre domaine de prédilection qui est la voile, c'est une constante. 

Here is an excellent review of this  "Martin C Melody" model by Stephen Howard. I really appreciate Steve's reviews as they provide a technical appraisal based on his concrete experience as a woodwind repairer. I recommend his web site with his Handy Tips and I fully approve of his approach: Testing, testing, testing... In my other favorite passion that is sailing, that's a must. 

D'après le No de série, il s'agit d'un modèle de 1922! Une vieille dame. Quand je reçois la bête, je suis un peu déçu. Il est en moins bon état qu'il ne paraissait sur les photos. Par ailleurs, le levier de la clé d'octave est tordu et il ne semble pas jouable. Je ne peux donc pas profiter de ce nouveau joujou sans un minimum de travail. 

From the serial number, this is a 1922 model! An old lady. When I get the beast, I am slightly disappointed. It is in poorer condition than it looked on the pictures. Also, the octave key lever is bent and it doesn't appear to be playable. So, I cannot enjoy this new toy without at least some effort. 

Après un examen plus approfondi, je constate que le placage argent est en excellent état et les mécanismes sont un peu fatigué, mais rien de sérieux. Les tampons par contre sont vraiment fatigués et je ne tiens pas à tenter une vilaine récupération comme sur le Super Rex. Je me mets donc en quête d'un fournisseur. J'ai rapidement trouvé MusicMedic, qui propose de nombreux articles pour saxophone et clarinette ainsi que des explications et guides permettant à un débutant comme moi de comprendre un peu où il met les pieds. Ils ont entre autres un assez large choix de tampons et résonateurs à des prix publics qui me semblent raisonnables. 

After a closer examination, I find the silver plating in very good condition and the action are somewhat used but nothing serious. The pads on the other hand are tired and I don't want to repeat the ugly pad saving that performed on the Super Rex. So I start looking for a supplier. I quickly found MusicMedic, that offer many saxophone and clarinette items as well as explanations and guides that enable beginners like me to understand a little bit more where we lay our feet. They have among other a rather large choice of pads and resonators at retail prices that I find reasonable.

Un saxophone peut en cacher un autre... / A saxophone may conceal another...

La description de ce blog dit: "Un saxophone peut en cacher un autre...*", ce qui reflète pour moi la réalité multiple attachée au saxophone.

This blog's description says: "One Saxophone may conceal another...*", that reflects for me the multiple reality attached to the saxophone. 

* This quote is derived from the French railways crossing warning signs that reads: "Un train peut en cacher un autre" or "One train may hide another" !

D'une part, il y a les différentes variantes de cet instrument: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baryton, etc., et il n'est pas rare de jouer de plusieurs d'entre eux. J'ai personnellement craqué pour les 4 précédents, mais aussi pour le C-Melody, bien que par accident, erreur ou manque de connaissance à l'époque. Mais je ne regrette rien! 

On one hand, there are a number of variants of this instrument: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, etc., and it is not uncommon to play several of them. I personally fell for all 4 above, but also for the C-Melody, although by accident, mistake or poor knowledge back then. But I have no regrets!

D'autre part, il y a les "stencils". Ces instruments produits par un fabricant sous une autre marque, souvent pour le compte d'un marchand d'instruments. Il n'est pas toujours facile de savoir qui a réellement produit un instrument et retracer l'origine d'un instrument se révèle instructif, car cette quête met en lumière l'histoire du saxophone sous toutes ses formes. 

On the other hand, there are the "stencils". These instruments produced by a maker under another brand name, often for an instrument merchant. It is not always easy to know who actually produced an instrument and retracing its origin proves to be instructive as this quest highlights the history of the saxophone in all its dimensions. 

Enfin, si vous êtes comme moi, lorsque je découvre un instrument, j'ai envie de connaitre sa famille, ses amis, ses ennemis... C'est vrai pour les instruments comme pour les accessoires que l'on utilise avec eux comme les becs, mais pas uniquement!

Finally, if you are like me, when I discover an instrument, I want to learn about it's family, friends, ennemies... That's true about the horns as well as the accessories that we use with them like mouthpieces, but not only!

Super Rex - Nettoyage / Cleaning

S'agissant là de mon tout premier projet, je n'ai pas tenté de procéder à une restauration complète. Je pensais même qu'un bon coup de chiffon ferait l'affaire. 

Being my very first project, I didn't attempt to perform a complete overhaul. I even thought that a good rub with the appropriate cloth would do the trick. 

Initialement, j'ai donc essayé de nettoyer le saxophone sans démontage, mais je me suis rapidement rendu compte que cela ne marche pas bien. Il y a trop de petits coins difficiles à atteindre et l'intérieur du tube est quasiment impossible à nettoyé correctement sans risquer de détériorer les tampons qui ne sont peut-être pas fait pour être passés sous la douche. 

So Initially, I tries to clean the saxophone without taking it apart, but I soon realized that it didn't work very well. There are too many corners that are difficult to reach and the inside of the bore is almost impossible to clean properly without risking to deteriorate the pads that are probably not made to be showered. 

J'ai donc entrepris de le désosser complètement, en tachant de bien laisser les petites vis en place au cas ou celles-ci ne soient pas interchangeables et pour ne pas les perdre. 

Therefore I boned it completely, keeping the small screws in place in case they were not switchable and not to loose them.

C'est assez impressionnant, surtout la première fois. Avec toutes ces aiguilles qui dépassent et dont il faut se méfier comme des oursins à la baignade. Mais il est difficile de ne pas s'y piquer pendant le nettoyage. Il faut les nettoyer une à une afin d'enlever les traces de rouille éventuelles. 

It is quite impressive, especially the first time. With all these needles sticking out that you must be aware as sea urchins for swimming.But it's difficult not to get yourself stung while cleaning. You must clean them one by one to remove potential rust traces. 

J'ai donc passé le tube sous la douche, avec un peu de savon et une sorte de plumeau pour radiateur pour enlever la crasse déposée au fil des ans à l'intérieur. Mais toujours en douceur, sans frotter excessivement. La culasse est assez délicate, car accessible uniquement au travers des cheminées. J'ai systématiquement utilisé des baguettes en bois, style baguette chinoises, avec du coton hydrophile au bout parfois imbibé d'un produit anti-tartre! C'est assez efficace mais il ne faut pas le laisser agir trop longtemps...

So I took the tube for a shower, with a little soap and a kind of plumy radiator duster to remove the grime accumulated inside over years. But always smoothly, without excessive rubbing. The bow section is quite delicate as it is only accessible through the adjacent tone holes. I systematically used wooden sticks, Chinese restaurant style, with coton wool at the tip sometimes damped with some anti-tartar solution. It is rather efficient but you shouldn't leave it for too long...  

Toutes les parties argentées sont passées par une phase de lustrage au tissu NAP*. C'est l'un des meilleurs produits que j'ai trouvé à ce jour avec les gants Hagerty*. Bien entendu, il faut s'occuper de toutes les clés et des gardes qui seront traitées individuellement avec le chiffon NAP. Là aussi j'utilise une baguette en bois sur laquelle je place le chiffon NAP pour atteindre les recoins difficiles. 

All silver parts have been polished with a NAP* cloth. This is one of the best product that I found to date with the Hagerty* gloves. Of course you need to look after all the keys and guards that will be treated individually with the NAP cloth. There again I use a wooden stick on which I place the NAP cloth to reach the difficult corners. 

Le remontage peut paraitre délicat. Par où commencer? Certains mécanismes ne sont pas évidents à monter et nécessitent un peu de patience. Il y a aussi des chances pour que certains lièges se soient décollés ou soient absents. Je conserve les bouchons de liège de bonne qualité (souvent associé à de bons vins) et je prélève selon les besoins. Il faut utiliser une colle contact, type Néoprène pour assurer une adhérence durable. Il faut aussi lubrifier un peu les axes (Voir Lubrifier les axes pour les geeks) pour assurer une bonne mobilité des clés.

Reassembly may appear to be delicate. Where should I start ? Some mechanisms aren't obvious to put together and require patience. It is also possible that some of the corks are loose or gone. I keep the good quality corks (often from quality wines) and I use as required. You must use a contact glue, neopren type to ensure durable adherence. You also need to lubricate the action (See Lubricate the action for geeks) to ensure proper keys mobility. 

Coté tampons, je ne me suis pas aventuré à les changer sur ce premier projet. D'une part je ne savais pas où m'en procurer et d'autre part l'opération me semblait un peu ambitieuse pour un début. Les tampons sont collés avec une sorte de colle-résine qui font à la chaleur et je n'avais pas trop envie de coller une flame sur les clés argentées de ce bel instrument qui brillait comme un astre! J'ai donc fait quelque chose qui fera sans doute hurler mes amis luthier. J'ai utilisé un cirage gras pour nourrir le cuir et lui rendre un peu d'élasticité, comme on le fait avec de vielles pompes. Le résultat n'est pas extraordinaire, mais vu l'usage assez modeste que je fait de cet instrument, cela lui permet d'être disons jouable. J'envisage aujourd'hui de procéder à un retamponnage complet, mais j'ai d'autres projets en attente, alors ce sera pour plus tard... 

On the pads side, I did not feel like changing them on my first project. On one hand I didn't know where to source them and also the process seemed a bit ambitious for a start. The pads are glued with a resin type glue that melts with heat and I didn't feel like taking a flame close to the silver plated keys of this star shinning beauty . So I did something that will probably get my saxophone tech friends screaming in horror. I used a greasy shoe polish to nourish the lather and restore its elasticity as we would do for an old pair of shoes. The result is not extraordinary, but given the modest usage I have of this instrument, that makes it playable. I envisage a full re-pad job for this horn now, but I have other projects waiting, so it'll have to be later...

Après remontage, c'est le moment d'essayer ce joli joujou et de voir s'il est encore capable de sortir des sons homogènes. J'avoue que j'ai eu de la chance, car il n'à pas trop souffert de cette épreuve.

After reassembly, it is time to test this beauty and see if it is still capable of playing consistent notes. I have to say that I was lucky as it didn't suffer to much from my treatment.

Super Rex - L'Origine - The Origin

Maintenant que j'ai un instrument, il me faut commencer à jouer. Je recherche donc une méthode pour commencer sur Amazon et je tombe sur une annonce pour un saxophone alto d'occasion, indiqué comme un 'Martin Handcraft'. Je fais donc quelques recherches complémentaires sur les saxophones 'Martin', modèle 'Handcraft' et je découvre le monde fascinant des marques et modèles plus ou moins vintages.

Now that I have an instrument, I need start playing it. Therefore I'm looking for a method to get started on Amazon and I bump into an add for a second hand alto saxophone, described as a 'Martin Handcraft'. So I run a few more searches about 'Martin' saxophones, 'Handcraft' model and I discover the fascinating world of more or less vintage brands and models.

Le prix relativement attractif et la finition argentée piquent ma curiosité alors je décide de contacter le vendeur et d'aller voir ce saxophone. Je savais à peine jouer du do médium au si grave et encore avec difficulté pour le si grave. 

The relatively attractive price and the silver finish turned me on so I decide to contact the seller and go see this saxophone. I barely knew how to play from C medium to low B and even with difficulty for the low B. 

Mais, comptant sur mes talents de bricoleur et une certaine aptitude à voir ce qui ne marche pas sur un ensemble mécanique, je me rends chez le vendeur pour étudier cet instrument et voir s'il est digne d'être acheté.

But counting on my DIYer's talents and an aptitude to see what doesn't work in a mechanical piece, I go to the seller's place to study this instrument and see if it's worth buying.

Je tombe alors là dessus - Here is what I find: 

Un bel instrument argenté qui mérite d'être nettoyé, mais qui est à première vue en bon état, sans bosses, dont les mécanismes semblent intacts et lorsque je l'essaye, les notes sortent sans trop de difficultés en dépit de tampons manifestement très secs et d'un bec collé au liège du bocal.

A beautiful silver plated instrument that deserves to be cleaned, but that is at first glance in good shape, without bumps, with key-works that appear to be intact and when I try it, the notes come out rather easily despite obviously dried out pads and a mouthpiece that's glued to the neck's cork.

Il ne s'agit pas d'un Martin, mais le mot Handcraft est gravé sur le pavillon:

Pas forcément convaincu de faire l'affaire du siècle, je repars donc avec mon nouvel instrument dans sa mallette. L'aventure continue maintenant avec un projet de remise en état de ce petit bijoux. 

Not necessarily convinced of making the deal of the century, I leave with my new horn in it's case. The adventure continues with a project of restoring this little jewel.

Il y a un début à tout ... There's always a beginning ...

  

Enfant, j'ai entendu beaucoup de musique. Mon père est né à Juan les Pins en 1930 et écoutait surtout du jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Gerry Mulligan... J'ai grandit avec cette musique. Cependant, je n'ai pas eu la chance d'étudier la musique enfant, si ce n'est quelques rudiments de solfège à l'école primaire. 

As a kid, I heard a lot of music. My dad was born in Juan-les-Pins in 1930 and listened mostly to Jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Gerry Mulligan... I grew up with this music. However, I was not lucky enough to study music as a kid, except for some rudimentary music theory in primary school. 

Mon père était officier de marine, pilote de chasse dans ses années Jazz, puis Amiral, il s'est ouvert à la musique classique, sans renier son intérêt pour le Jazz. 

My Dad was a navy officer, fighter pilot in his Jazz years, then Admiral, he opened up to classical music, without denying his interest for Jazz.

Jeune adulte, je partageais avec un nombre limité d'amis, mon intérêt pour cette musique. Lisant des livres sur le sujet et essayant d'aller écouter des artistes dans des caves comme la Pinte qui à l'époque recevait régulièrement de petites formations, exiguïté des lieux oblige, dans une atmosphère passionnée. Parlant déjà un peu anglais, j'avais échangé quelques mots avec un grand noir américain d'un certain age, assit comme moi dans l'escalier. Il était pianiste et jouait dans un cabaret près de la madeleine pour quelques temps. J'y suis allé le week-end suivant, découvrant un excellent pianiste qui accompagnait une chanteuse acceptable. C'est durant les pauses de celle-ci qu'il s'exprimait réellement, pour mon grand plaisir. 

As a young adult, I shared with a limited number of friends, my interest for this music. Reading books on the topic and trying to go and listen to artists in places like 'la Pinte', a small bar with a tiny underground cellar that hosted small bands back in those days, in a passionate atmosphere. As I spoke some English, I talked to a large black aging american man, sat in the stairs like me. He was pianist and played in a cabaret near the Madeleine for a while. I went the following week-end, discovering an excellent pianist supporting an acceptable local female singer. It was during her breaks that he really expressed himself, for my great pleasure.

Vivant à Paris dans un petit appartement et compte tenu de la faiblesse de mon éducation musicale formelle (solfège), je n'ai pas osé m'aventurer à apprendre à jouer. J'allais regarder rêveur dans la boutique Paul Beuscher de magnifiques saxophones qui me semblaient totalement hors d'atteinte. 

Living in a small flat in Paris and given the weakness of my formal musical background (music theory), I dared not venture into learning how to play. I was dreamingly contemplating Paul Beuscher's shop's display of magnificent saxophones that appeared to be out of reach. 

Il m'a fallu 30 ans pour me décider enfin. Un hiver, alors que ma femme et mes enfants travaillaient leur instrument. Je me suis senti laissé pour compte, en dehors du coup et j’ai eu l’envie de combler ce manque, de corriger cette erreur de parcours. Après quelques recherches sur internet, j’ai donc commandé un saxophone alto Yamaha YAS275, considéré à l’époque comme l’une des références comme instrument d’étude. 

It took me 30 years to finally make the move. One winter, while my wife and kids practiced their instrument. I felt left behind, out of the game and I felt the need to fill the void, to fix that failure in me. After a few internet searches, I ordered a Yamaha YAS275 alto saxophone, then considered as a reference for students.  

C’était le tout début d’une aventure dont je ne soupçonnais pas la portée...

It was the very beginning of an adventure witch I did not suspect the scope...
