Robert Martin - Mysterious Saxophone Mystérieux

Il y a quelques années, je cherchais un saxophone ténor plaqué argent. Pourquoi argenté? Simplement parque j'aime ça et qu'avec un bon coup de chiffon c'est presque comme neuf alors que le vernis c'est plus compliqué. 

A few years ago, I was looking for a silver plated tenor saxophone. Why silver? Simply because I love it and with a good a lick of cloth it's almost like new while with laquer it's more complicated. 

J'en ai trouvé un qui était beau et pas trop cher sur eBay. D'après l'annonce il s'agissait d'un SML, marque française d'excellente réputation qui abandonna la fabrication de saxophones en 1982 face à la concurrence de Selmer. Marigaux existe encore, mais se consacre exclusivement aux hautbois. Je ne me souviens pas des détails de l'annonce et je n'ai pas conservé les photos, mais je n'ai pas cherché à en savoir davantage et j'ai acheté ce ténor sans trop me poser de questions.

I found one that looked great and wasn't too expensive on eBay. According to the ad, it was an SML, highly rated french maker that gave up producing saxophones in 1982 due to the steep competition from Selmer. Marigaux still exists but focuses exclusively on oboes. I can't recall the details of the add and I didn't keep the pictures, but I didn't try to know much more and I bought this tenor without asking myself too many questions. 

Quand je l'ai reçu, j'ai été rapidement refroidi par son état général. Non seulement il n'était pas très propre, mais surtout il avait un sérieux enfoncement sur le tube au niveau de l'attache du pavillon, avec 2 cheminées déformées et le bocal était aussi partiellement dessoudé. Il manquait aussi un tampon, mais vu l'état des cheminées, un tampon n'avait aucune chance de coller. 

When I received it, I was quickly cooled off by its general state. It was not only dirty, but mostly it had a very serious trough on the tube where the bell section connects to the main body, with two deformed tone holes and a partially with unsoldered neck. A pad was missing too, but given the state of the tone holes, a pad couldn't stick anyways. 

Par ailleurs, je découvre qu'il ne s'agit pas d'un SML. La gravure sur le pavillon indique "Robert Martin" - "MACON" - "S&L" surmonté d'un "RM" flammé qui aura finalement son importance, comme on le verra plus tard... Robert Martin n'était pas facteur d'instruments de musique, mais éditeur de partitions et revendeur de 'stensils' comme ce Dolnet M70. Mais de quoi s'agit-il réellement, je vais mettre du temps pour le savoir. 

Also, I found out that it wasn't a SML. The engraving on the bell says "Robert Martin" - "MACON" - "S&L" with an "RM" over the top that will prove to be important, as we'll discover later... Robert Martin was not an instrument maker, but a score publisher and reseller of 'stensils' like this Dolnet M70. But what is this really, it will take some time for me to find out. 

J'ai donc laissé de côté ce nouvel instrument, frustré une fois de plus de ne pouvoir l'essayer et me rendre compte de son intérêt ou pas! Mais je gardais en tête qu'il me fallait trouver une solution pour réparer l'enfoncement et les cheminées adjacentes. J'ai finalement trouvé. 

So I left this instrument aside, frustrated once again not to be able to try it and find out if it was worth it or not! But I kept in mind that I had to find a solution to repair this trough and the adjacent tone holes. I finally found a way. 

J'ai donc entrepris de démonter et nettoyer ce ténor mystérieux avec sa garde si particulière. A la douche avec mon accessoire spécial nettoyage de tube! Puis j'ai finalisé le concept de l'outil qui me permettra de redresser le tube de l'intérieur. Un morceau de tube PVC fendu, agrémenté d'un tasseau de bois et complété par un long tasseau biseauté permettant d'écarter le tube PVC à l'intérieur! Le tube PVC est introduit par le pavillon, pendant que le tasseau biseauté rentre par le haut du tube. 

So I went on to disassemble and clean this mysterious tenor with it's rather unique guard. To the shower with my special tube leaning accessory! Then I finalized the concept of the tool that will enable me to straighten the tube from the inside. A split piece of PVC tube assorted by a piece of wood and completed by a long bevelled wood batten that will enlarge the PVC tube from inside! The PVC tube in introduced by the bell while the bevelled batten enters the tube from the top. 

Une fois positionné, il suffit de tirer sur le tasseau pour écarter le tube PVC qui repousse le métal vers l'extérieur. Le tube reprend doucement sa forme initiale ainsi que les cheminées, ou presque. Un coup de papier de verre fin à l'aide d'un support bien plan permet de rétablir la planéité des bords de la cheminée, indispensable à un bouchage parfait des tampons. 

Once positioned, you just to pull the batten to thrust apart le PVC tube and push the metal of the tube outwards. The tube gets back to its original shape as well as the tone holes, or nearly so. A gentle scrub with sand paper applied on a flat surface to the tone holes will ensure their flatness, indispensable to obtain proper sealing of the pads.   

Le travail n'est pas terminé puisqu'il faut remplacer les tampons ainsi que les touches en nacre qui manquent. Mais c'est une autre histoire qui fera l'objet d'un prochain article.

The job is not completed as the pads need replacing as well as the missing pearl keys. But that's another story that will be covered by in an article soon. 

Martin Silver Plated C-Melody - Introduction

Ma première expérience de saxophone "vintage" m'a conduit à explorer les marques et modèles, notamment la marque "Martin" qui m'a semblé être particulièrement intéressante. Une marque de légende utilisée par Charlie Parker dans les années 40, même s'il a adopté par la suite le King Super 20* ou joué le fameux Grafton en plastique! J'ai découvert le Super 20 après avoir revu 'Bird' de Clint Eastwood. Intrigué par la clé d'octave inversée, j'ai recherché les modèles concernés et suis tombé sur ce modèle King Super 20, mais aussi sur des Buescher 400 Top Hat and Cane ou certains Conn 6M (VIII). Autant de saxes particulièrement désirables!

My first "vintage" saxophone experience drove me to explore the brands and models, especially the "Martin" brand that sounded quite interesting. A legendary brand used by Charlie Parker in the 40's although he later on adopted the King Super 20* and played the famous Grafton plastic saxophone! I discovered the Super 20 after watching Clint Eastwood's 'Bird' again. Intrigued by the underslung octave key, I searched for the matching models and bumped into the Super 20, but also the Buescher 400 Top Hat and Cane or certain Conn 6M (VIII). All of which are particularly desirable horns. 

En tout cas, nombreux sont les fans de Martin alors je me suis mis en tête d'en trouver un. Après quelques mois de patience, je mets la main sur la perle rare! Sur eBay, aux USA. Un Ténor argenté ou du moins quelque chose qui y ressemblait beaucoup. La taille de l'instrument était précisée, mais ce détail n'a pas immédiatement attiré mon attention. Il m'a intrigué, puis j'ai vérifié et alors compris qu'il s'agit en effet d'un C-Melody. 

In any case, there are many Martin fans so I had in mind to find one. After a few months of patience I finally get my hands on the rare gem!  On eBay, in the US of A. A silver plated tenor or at least something that looked a lot like one. The size of the instrument was mentioned, but that detail didn't raise my attention initially. It intrigued me, then I double checked and understood that it was in fact a C-Melody.

J'apprécie beaucoup ses revues qui donnent une appréciation technique des instruments basée sur l'expérience concrète d'un luthier. Je recommande son site avec ses conseils pratiques et j'approuve totalement son approche: Testing, testing, testing... Dans mon autre domaine de prédilection qui est la voile, c'est une constante.

I really appreciate Steve's reviews as they provide a technical appraisal based on his concrete experience as a woodwind repairer. I recommend his web site with his Handy Tips and I fully approve of his approach: Testing, testing, testing... In my other favorite passion that is sailing, that's a must. 

D'après le No de série, il s'agit d'un modèle de 1922! Une vieille dame. Quand je reçois la bête, je suis un peu déçu. Il est en moins bon état qu'il ne paraissait sur les photos. Par ailleurs, le levier de la clé d'octave est tordu et il ne semble pas jouable. Je ne peux donc pas profiter de ce nouveau joujou sans un minimum de travail. 

From the serial number, this is a 1922 model! An old lady. When I get the beast, I am slightly disappointed. It is in poorer condition than it looked on the pictures. Also, the octave key lever is bent and it doesn't appear to be playable. So, I cannot enjoy this new toy without at least some effort. 

Après un examen plus approfondi, je constate que le placage argent est en excellent état et les mécanismes sont un peu fatigué, mais rien de sérieux. Les tampons par contre sont vraiment fatigués et je ne tiens pas à tenter une vilaine récupération comme sur le Super Rex. Je me mets donc en quête d'un fournisseur. J'ai rapidement trouvé MusicMedic, qui propose de nombreux articles pour saxophone et clarinette ainsi que des explications et guides permettant à un débutant comme moi de comprendre un peu où il met les pieds. Ils ont entre autres un assez large choix de tampons et résonateurs à des prix publics qui me semblent raisonnables. 

After a closer examination, I find the silver plating in very good condition and the action are somewhat used but nothing serious. The pads on the other hand are tired and I don't want to repeat the ugly pad saving that performed on the Super Rex. So I start looking for a supplier. I quickly found MusicMedic, that offer many saxophone and clarinette items as well as explanations and guides that enable beginners like me to understand a little bit more where we lay our feet. They have among other a rather large choice of pads and resonators at retail prices that I find reasonable.
